April / May

The students were kept busy during the month of April completing CRT's and state testing. They all did a tremendous job of answering the questions to the best of their abilities. It is always difficult to maintain that focus when the sun is shining and the birds are singing; however, I'm pleased to share that they made it!

Next, the students created some wonderful breakfast stories and celebrated by flipping their own pancakes, frying their own eggs, and making their own waffles. The stories tasted pretty delicious by the time we completed the objectives. All of the students reflected upon their writing and speaking skills to receive an important summative grade for the year.

Currently, they are creating time lines which depict world events that have occurred during their lifetime. It takes many days to research, identify, and present the facts, and the reports should all be completed by May 20.

February - BSP English

February has been an extremely busy month for the 7th, 8th, and 9th graders in the English classroom at BSP.

*The 7th graders have been working on reading for understanding and summarizing stories.

*The 8th grade students completed 5 paragraph state writes and enjoyed some delicious lunch meals to celebrate their accomplishments!

*The 9th graders were busy this week with the WGDE Writing test. Next week, the students will continue with a narrative write and an expository write for the district. Please help your child come to school prepared to do their best. It is important that they get plenty of sleep and eat a healthy breakfast.

All the students have been focusing on appropriate technology procedures and expectations. The vocabulary terms for the week included plagiarism and paraphrasing. The students practiced citing book sources and identifying various web-sites.

Remember to mark your calendars for the March 8th Parent Conferences. The students will be sharing with you their "books of knowledge" and discussing all of their accomplishments from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. We hope to see you there!

December Presentations and January Preparation

The students worked diligently on slide shows before the holiday break and presented 3 pages of facts on chosen topics. Then we celebrated with some awesome cheese dip, cookies, and carrots. The students will continue using technology in positive ways to communicate with others.

During January we will focus on practicing reading for understanding. It is great practice to have your child read newspaper or magazine articles and then discuss who, what, where, when, and why. This week we are preparing for NESA-R through practice selections. The students have been learning and applying various figurative language terms. Ask them to give you an example of the following terms: similes, idioms, metaphors, hyperboles, alliteration, onamonapia.

If you have any questions about the English classroom, please feel free to contact me between 8 - 9 a.m. and 2 - 3 p.m. If you are interested in viewing any of your child's work, please stop in and view their "Book of Knowledge." It is a portfolio with examples of the daily learning activities throughout the year.

Have a great January and stay warm!
